Jet fuel exports to Europe help meet summer rush, set for new record

July falls in the middle of the European summer travel season that lasts from June to August.

India’s export of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) could touch an all-time monthly high in June and the country is likely to be Europe’s biggest source of jet fuel in July, which also marks the peak of the continent’s summer travel season, as per an analysis of data shared by commodity market analytics and intelligence firm Kpler.

India’s ATF export volumes so far in June have averaged at a record high of 208,433 barrels per day (bpd). As per Kpler data, the previous peak of 206,871 bpd was in June 2018. More than half of the dispatched ATF volumes from India this month are headed for Europe, where they are likely to arrive in July as the voyage usually takes about a month.

As per Kpler’s estimates, European imports of ATF in July are likely to be around 435,482 bpd, of which 131,136 bpd, or over 30 per cent, are likely to be from India. Indian refiners, particularly export-oriented private sector players Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy, have emerged as major suppliers of refined petroleum products to Europe as the continent shuns Russian crude oil and petroleum fuels over the war in Ukraine. Interestingly, this comes alongside Indian refiners snapping up discounted Russian crude, leading to the perception that products derived from Russian barrels may be reaching European shores via India.

Cricket World Cup venues to get an upgrade: Imported grass, new outfields, better floodlights

New floodlights and corporate boxes in Mumbai; a relaid pitch in Lucknow; upgraded dressing rooms in Kolkata; new outfield with imported grass in Dharamsala; a new makeshift roof in Pune; an upgraded ticketing system and improved toilets in Delhi. These are some of the projects to be undertaken at the venues that will host ICC 50-over World Cup games in October-November.

World Cup games will be hosted in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Dharamsala, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Kolkata. Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram stage warm-up games.

Different stadiums have different needs. Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium, set to host four league games and a semi-final, will have its outfield relaid, while upgrading to new LED lighting, as well as renovating the corporate boxes and toilets.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is installing new LED lights and the square has been dug up to implant two red soil pitches. Lucknow, which is hosting India’s game against England, will be relaying its pitches that received a lot of flak during the IPL. Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium is refurbishing its seating and toilets.

Extensive work has already been done at the HPCA Stadium at Dharamsala. The venue couldn’t host the Test allotted to it against Australia as renovation work wasn’t completed, but now claims to be ready to host five World Cup games – including India’s encounter against New Zealand. A new drainage system that has 6,000 metres of specialty pipes has been installed, an air-evacuation system that can get rid of excess rainwater in quick time, ryegrass reportedly best suitable for the cold weather, and river sand and gravel tested at a lab in Scotland has been used on the outfield. Ryegrass was first seeded at temperatures between 3 to 15 degrees in winter and mixed with shade-resistant Paspalum grass, Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association said in a statement.

“We relaid the whole surface of the stadium and we did a makeover of VVIP and hospitality boxes too. We hired the best expert for the relaying process. We wanted to ensure we have good drainage facilities and got grass from abroad. We changed a few seats, painted the stands. There was a leakage problem, we fixed that too,” Arun Dhumal, an HPCA member told The Indian Express. “We wanted to ensure that after rain, the game should start as soon as possible.”

Every World Cup stadium will get a grant of Rs 50 crore to upgrade its infrastructure ahead of the big tournament. The Indian cricket board has budgeted for more than Rs 500 crore to be distributed among the 10 World Cup venues.

Mumbai Cricket Association president Amol Kale assured that the Wankhede Stadium, which hosted the 2011 final, will be providing world-class infrastructure and best hospitality service.

“The process of infrastructure upgradation has already begun including a new outfield, upgrading to new LED lighting, renovation of the corporate boxes, and renovated new toilets,” Kale said.

Maharashtra Cricket Association president Rohit Pawar explained that the ongoing Maharashtra Premier League (MPL) has given them a fair idea on areas of improvement for the Pune stadium.

“We will see if we can have a few stands which can be covered, as three-quarters of the stadium doesn’t have a roof. We want to provide basic facilities like clean toilets, good roads and ample parking space. If any seats are in bad shape we will be replacing them. We will see whether the fencing metal is ok, the ticket readers are working or not. Our drainage system is fine, so are the floodlights,” Pawar told this newspaper.

At Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, spectator-seating and toilets are being refurbished, apart from upgrading the ticketing software.

“The floodlights at the stadium are of good quality, so we don’t have to change them. However, the seats are being changed and the toilets renovated. The software at the turnstiles will also be upgraded so the entry process for fans is smooth,” Delhi and District Cricket Association joint secretary Rajan Manchanda said. The grass at the ground has also been recarpeted during the off-season, he confirmed.
